Dr. Andrea M. Valerio practices in Virginia Beach, enjoying the moderate climate and the easy access to the oceanfront. She has over 30 years of clinical experience and specializes in relationships, sex therapy, recovery from dysfunctional and abusive families, healing the inner child, loss and grief, stress, life transitions, women's issues, and personal empowerment. Before private practice, she counseled thousands of people around the country in such diverse settings as hospitals, health centers, clinics, mental health agencies, universities, job corps programs, and the criminal justice system.

Dr. Valerio received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from The State University of New York at Buffalo after receiving her master's degree from Temple University in Philadelphia. Her clinical psychology internship was completed at Case Western Reserve's University Hospitals of Cleveland in the Department of Psychiatry. Her clinical psychology residency was completed at The Multimodal Therapy Institute, formerly in Virginia Beach.

Dr. Valerio has taught a variety of college psychology courses, including: Basic Interviewing and Counseling Skills, Group Process, Psychotherapy Principles and Practices, Learning and Motivation, The Psychology of Stress, Personality Theory, Women's Issues, and her specialty, Human Sexuality.

Dr. Valerio believes strongly in continuing education, and she attends many conferences and workshops each year on various clinical topics. Her curiosity and thirst for knowledge compel her to seek answers to life's questions. The process of personal growth and awareness is particularly important to her. Toward that end, Dr. Valerio does not believe there is only 'one right way' to discover yourself or achieve your goals. As she has expressed it, "There are many pathways to wisdom, and all of them deserve our awe and respect — especially the most challenging ones that bring us such painful, yet important, lessons."

Dr. Valerio has written several books. Her current bestseller, "Ask Dr. Andrea: A Psychologist's Guide To Living Well and Loving Better" offers expert advice about relationships and sexuality. The book includes practical suggestions, useful tips, plus letters from readers. This is real life for real people in an easy-to-read format.

Dr. Valerio is eminently approachable and compassionate, with good people skills and an effervescent personality. She is frequently called by local writers and news people as a psychology resource and has made many radio and television appearances. She prides herself on being able to put psychological concepts into user-friendly language, as well as convey sexual information in a straightforward manner. Her professional training blends well with her intuition, resulting in keen insights and accurate perceptions. She dispenses her wisdom with warmth, compassion, and humor, challenging her readers to be true to themselves.

Dr. Valerio enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, boating, animals, and of course — the beach! In the photo below, she can be found enjoying one of her favorite pastimes: relaxing on the beach with her furry companions.
